How To Properly Throw Away Disposable Masks
Environmental Impact of Masks
Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic we’ve all used our fair share of masks, disposable or not. Protecting your health and the health of others is of the utmost importance, but many of us don’t realize how much waste has been created as a result. Single-use plastic use has significantly increased in order to maintain hygiene across various industries. Unfortunately, our oceans and wildlife pay the price when this waste accumulates on a large scale.
While using reusable masks is more economical and environmentally conscious, the convenience of disposable masks is undoubtable. Since many people use them daily throughout a normal week, tons of them are being disposed of carelessly. Unfortunately, the plastic they’re made from, polypropylene, is not biodegradable. So when they end up in our environment such as in waterways they break down into micro plastics. These small particles release hazardous chemicals that are extremely harmful to fragile ecosystems and wildlife.
The elastic parts of masks that strap around the ears are specifically dangerous for marine life. This is because they are easy to become tangled up in or ingested resulting in fatalities.
Moving forward it’s critical for us all to be aware of the best practices of mask disposal.
Ways to become conscious of mask disposal:
- Cutting off the elastic straps on disposable masks can prevent animals from being entangled or choking on them.
- Check to see if local recycling facilities take disposable masks.
If you want to take the best course of action, look into investing in reusable masks. There are so many benefits to being able to wash and reuse masks. Some include preventing buildup of acne-causing bacteria, dust build up, and skin irritation. See our full mask collection for many different stylish and eco-friendly styles.
